Pants Done, Ho Hum

Here they are. They're done. But I'm not completely enthused about them. The fit is good but the cut is, well, not my most flattering pair of pants. I thought the seaming would show up more, but it doesn't … not even in real life. Maybe in denim with contrast thread it would be better, but I don't think I like them enough to try again. Especially not when there's still 1,472,968 pants patterns yet to try. ;-) But they are comfortable so I'll wear them. I just won't love them.

Truthfully, I think what I'm feeling most ho-hum about is the body inside the pants. I'm never going to be rail thin, but during football season and the holidays I added enough additional fluff that I'm ready to do something drastic … you know, like eating healthier! And increased walking. Even a 10-lb. loss would do wonders for how my clothes hang on me and how I feel in them.

But enough of my whining. Here's a photo of the pocket and topstitching. Even artificially lightening the pic doesn't help make the stitching stand out.

And here's a view of the waistband elastification (new word!) and the inside. The instructions are sorta sparse for the waistband but I'm pretty sure they didn't instruct to turn under the inside edge of the waistband, which is just fine with me since I usually don't anyway. As per usual with straight WOF waistbands, there's no actual pattern piece and I didn't pay close enough attention so I ended up cutting it without a seam allowance. And not enough fabric left to cut it again. Oops. But I had cut the rest of the pieces with a 5/8" seam allowance so I just used 1/4" to sew the waistband to the top of the pants, making it off only by about 3/8". Not really noticeable when being worn.

I'm glad I tried out the Minott alteration. I think it's going to be a winner for me.

  1. I think it looks very nice Debbie. As you say about the fit, it is the body in the pants. Too many curves to fit I think. I feel your pain, as in I 'know' your pain..lol...

Maybe it is the fabric you used, too soft and drapey perhaps?

You have convinced me to try the Minott method too. Thank you very much for posting that pic. I'll take it from there. I will also definitely get rid of both my Palmer Pletsch books. They do nothing for me. I purchased them because people raved. Maybe they raved because of the colourful illustrations, I don't know but I have never found them helpful or informative.

I am going to see if that Burda mag is around here somewhere for that pattern.

Looking at the pictures Debbie, those pants look very good on you.

  4. The pants look good from where I am sitting. Ok, so I'm sitting on the other side of the world, which means I'm seeing them from far away, VERY far away (LOL), but they look from here. :)

  9. The "no wrinkle" fit looks great. I've got a couple of the Minnot books I've been intending to dig out and take a closer look to try to understand. Thanks for sharing your journey on this method!

  11. I've made no progress on losing the "holiday 10" either. Maybe I'll start walking up & down my stairs more times per day....yeah....that'll happen.

Glad you have counted all the pants patterns left to be tried. Nice to have an authoratative number. I too like the fit of these pants, but, since you have to wear them, you're the expert! And, congrats on inventing a new word!

  12. The pants fit beautifully and fitting well is always flattering. Even if these aren't your favorite pants, think of how quickly you got them to fit well. A major accomplishment.

  13. Actually, I think this pair of pants worth its weight in gold for the representation of the success of the Minnott method. I think I'm going to try to find one of those books.
And I'm totally with you on the ho-hum of the body inside the clothes (Mine, not yours). I'm getting ready to do something equally as drastic - like going back to the gym.
    Argh!

  16. Your sewing and pattern fitting skills are tip-top. It's so refreshing to come across a blog or a site where someone actually knows what they are doing and makes those garments look even better!!!

Thank you for each and every comment. I appreciate them all, but I have to be honest and let you know that I'm usually bad about answering questions. I hope you understand that there just isn't enough time in the day to do everything I want to do.
