Another "Vintage" Blouse

When I was cutting out the brown Butterick skirt, I also cut out another Ottobre-based "vintage" blouse, this time with short, non-gathered sleeves. I sewed it first because the serger was already threaded with ivory thread. But once again, I'm stalled at the buttons and need to make a trip to Joann's for those before I can finish it.

The fabric is really soft rayon with a woven-in micro stripe. It wrinkles as soon as you breathe on it, so I'm not sure how practical this will be for schlepping to/from work. I'll try some spray starch on it when I'm done and see if that helps.

For this one, I detoured from the Ottobre instructions and sewed the collar down at the back neckline "in the ditch" instead of …

…covering it with a bias strip per the instructions, which I did for the first blouse below. Oh, and these colors are actually pretty accurate for once.

I've started sewing the brown skirt and will finish that up by tomorrow since it should go together pretty quickly. A quick look at the instructions has told me I'll be winging this one since Butterick's order and methods leave a lot to be desired.

That's all I have for now. My days have been filled with sending out resumes and fielding telephone calls, around the sewing. No plans for the holiday weekend, except sleeping in and maybe a trip to the dog beach on Sunday.

  1. Both of your methods for the back neck of the shirt look good. That is an area that is always a problem for me deciding how to neatly do that small area between the shoulder seams and the facing area at the shoulders. The shirts I used to do mostly had the neckband so I never dealt much with this type collar and facings. Now the patterns seem to have more of this type than the collar stand so I need to get better at doing them and faster as shirts are really popular now.
Happy memorial day and have fun sleeping in and going to the dog beach. mssewcrazy

  2. Speaking of resumes and fielding phone calls, any prospects on the job front?

  4. These blouses are classically lovely and your skills are amazing; fast, talented and determined too, as when you occasionally "goof". (Oh, yes - also honest!) I lurk frequently in order to learn, but have not yet advanced beyond "determined". Enjoy your breather. OllieV

  5. Hi
I'm new to your blog, but find it very interesting.
I have a couple of questions...
you mention Ottebre vintage blouse pattern. Where do I get these patterns. I love the outfit you made with a brown skirt - the cream vintage blouse and Project runway jacket.
Which patterns were used on those garments?
Will be checking you out very regularly from now on.
Also - you use many initials for things - do you have a legend anywhere on your blog?

  6. Julie,
I apologize for the delay, but I'm bad about checking for old comments. You can buy the Ottobre pattern magazines at Ottobredesign.com. The outfit you mentioned is the Ottobre blouse, a Simplicity jacket (2899) and a Butterick skirt (4877).

Thank you for each and every comment. I appreciate them all, but I have to be honest and let you know that I'm usually bad about answering questions. I hope you understand that there just isn't enough time in the day to do everything I want to do.
