A New Day

The sun is shining here — both figuratively and literally — and there's actual sewing action in the sewing room. You should be able to tell by the photo above which garment called the loudest.

All Hail Ye Tried N True!!

Let's do a comparison, shall we?

Last weekend: Unfold, cut and press never-used Burda jeans pattern. Cut out and sew muslin. Stare in the mirror. Remove muslin, go downstairs and watch football for a while. Back upstairs. Put muslin back on. Stare in mirror again. Make pattern adjustments. Cut out and sew next muslin. Stare in the mirror. Close down sewing room for the week and go watch football and Mad Men. Do some laundry. Go to bed.

This weekend: Try on last weekend's muslin #2. Fold up pattern, both muslins, and set aside. Try on slightly too-small years-old jeans from TNT jeans pattern. Try on capris from same jeans pattern. Try on 2-3 other pants/capris from 2nd TNT pattern. Write whiney blog entry. ;-) Get out TNT jeans pattern. Trace front and back pieces. Slash/spread to add 3/8" to each piece (1-1/2" total addition to width). Trace/adjust pocket pieces & waistband. Cut *denim.* Set up Viking 6010 for topstitching. Sew pockets, fly, darts. Go to bed. Wake up. Check blogs and emails. Baste inseams, outseams and crotch. Try on. Take pic of fly for blog. Write blog entry, and get ready to go finish the perfectly fitting jeans.

See any differences? ;-)

  1. Hilarious! But yes, I'm to the point of having 3 tnt pants patterns: a trouser, a jean an a stretch jean. I have NO intention of tracing or cutting any other pants patterns. Besides after I make all the adjustments needed, the "new" pattern is going to look almost exactly the same as the old TNT. I've decided to use the TNT's and just change details (pocket shapes, belt loops, embroidery on pockets, stuff like that.)

  2. I keep trying new patterns, then going back to the TNT ones, especially for skirts. I hate reinventing the wheel, so to speak.

  3. Consider yourself lucky. I'm yet to develop a TNT pants pattern.

  4. I definitely see a difference. I laughed so hard at the bit about staring in the mirror, going to do something else, and then staring in the mirror some more. Boy oh boy that sounds familar. :) I wonder how our mirrors would sum up the weekend? LOL!

Why screw with perfection, I say!

  7. Oh yeah! This weekend is much better :) A little whining is necessary to maintain sanity.

  8. Ok, so I never want to hear you say you are trying another pants pattern! Hear?! They are the devil, out to tempt you. Be strong!

  9. I thought that I was the only one who spends weekends like your last one. Now, I know that I'm not alone. I had a pants pattern that fit and then the old body changed. Yes, it's enough to make me humble! I'm glad that this weekend was so much better - I noticed the difference. Thanks for starting my Monday with a smile. :)

  10. The jeans are lookin' good! I know how you feel with too much work and not enough time to sew. I had surgery on my right elbow and am in a cast and so I can't sew, can't work and am bored to tears!!! Only a couple of weeks more. I have to live vicariously through you and other sewing bloggers.

  11. I notice in the picture that you angle the bottom of the zipper fly, instead of trying to sew "that perfect curve" as I think of it (which on my attempts is never perfectly curved, either!).

Any particular reason? Because you can? It certainly looks easier.

  12. Sz, I usually make a normal shaped fly. I was just going for something different this time. Change things up.

Thank you for each and every comment. I appreciate them all, but I have to be honest and let you know that I'm usually bad about answering questions. I hope you understand that there just isn't enough time in the day to do everything I want to do.
