Change of Course

Thank you for all the nice comments on the dress yesterday. Like Carolyn, I'm a comment 'ho and, well, keep 'em coming. ;-) (And Carolyn — you haven't updated your blog in ELEVEN days … I'm just sayin' …)

I didn't spend a lot of time in the sewing room yesterday, but I did pull out some knit scraps and cut some new panties. I'm overdue, but no one sees 'em so it hasn't been a big priority.

I cut out 6 pairs (2 of the blue). I'm using poly knit scraps this time for the silky and "firming" factors. Think Spanx-lite.

It's apparently still not a big priority because that's as far as I got. After perusing my "on deck" pattern basket last night, I set them aside for a while, in favor of …

…this! The print will be a remake of Butterick 4818. Which is this jacket below, one of my favorite things ever that I've made. The alterations are already done from the first make so I should be able to just cut and sew. Fingers crossed.

The solid is a knit, which will be a gored skirt. At least that's the current plan. Always subject to change, of course.

I was reminded in the comments yesterday that it would've been pointless to vacuum, what with the Rapture and impending end of the world. I didn't need my arm twisted, so my sewing room floor still looks like this. But I'm going to enjoy the prerogative to leave a dedicated sewing room floor messy because I probably won't have a separate sewing room once I move to an apartment. You win some, you lose some, right?

Parting Shots: The Marine hard at work on the flight deck, and hard at play on a Single Marine Program trip to Busch Gardens Williamsburg yesterday.

  1. Debbie - thanks for the reminder! I don't know how that could have possibly slipped my mind! *LOL* I know it's hard to make recommendations or give advice in blog comments...but I'm gonna anyway.

When you start to look for apartments, look for one that has an unusual nook or an extra large bedroom/living room area where you can fashion a sewing area. You will miss it more than you realize and you are making enough adjustments in your life.

A new sewing area will go a long way in helping you to feel normal. This I know from experience!

  2. Your hair is so cute! And it looks (on my computer screen) like the new skirt might go with the previous jacket...(whichI love!) (Gotta get that pattern!)
I read you on Google reader, and I don't comment much for anyone, so that's why you may never have heard my name before, but I am hoping that all works out well for you.
My son is in the Air Force, so I know about basic, and tech training, and all that.
    best wishes and hugs

  3. That's so cool that you make your own underwear. I've read your bra-making serie and I enjoyed that. Got loads of pointers there! Good on you - not hoovering the floor!!!

Carolyn's right about the advice on the appartment-hunting. An odd living room or bed room will do great for making a sewing-corner. I sure miss my extra room (it's DD's now).

  4. Oh great, so you can join the lingerie sew-along on PR again :) All these news stories lately about DSK and Schwarzeneggar and marriage problems... it can be an odd sort of comfort that we're not alone with problems at home. I'd wish you courage, but to be honest, the most important thing you'll need is love, which will give you all the courage you need. It also brings forgiveness along with it. You're going to be fine. ((hug))

You're so right! I knew that rapture had to be good for something :-).
I'm getting fonder of rayon and lycra for panties. I've decided they're the softest, breathable (should be a factor in Florida) and they have good rebound factor. Check it out.

  6. Wow! You have been busy. Re the sewing room - I made the MBR the sewing room and sleep in the tiny bedroom:) Much better use of space.

  7. It's always fun to see what sewing project you're up to. Even though a Marine...they still like to play.

  9. I haven't blogged since, oh, never mind. I keep saying I will get back to it. I even have the prize (in a paper bag) for an upcoming drawing.

I think the future outfit will be great.

    I love Busch Gardens Williamsburg!

  10. What Carolyn said! Or you could do like I did when I lived in an apartment and turn the dining area into your sewing room.

  11. Carolyn's thoughts on apartments are spot on, but if you can't find this in your price range invest in a screen divider. Pop your sewing table behind it.

  12. That will make a lovely jacket!

  13. Good job getting some things done in the sewing room. I didn't vacuum my sewing room either, seems like a waste of time, the way I sew (rapture or no rapture)!

  14. Love the new dress from last post. I like your idea about crossing over the panels for added coverage.

  15. The marine son picture is so funny spouting water. Lol!
As per Katherine's comment I should write a novel about the marital adventures of a close family member who has been through some major deception and upheaval and which pretty much has had me leave the sewing world for a long while as she and her small children rearrange their life and move to a new place. Thankfully she has a great job but I help out a lot and commute and stay over. Rearranging one's life is not easy but the rewards are great to get into a new one that lacks abuse and or deceit. A new place that is yours will help also in a new start. When you look try to get a place that has a spot for a rectangular table if possible especially if you have to give up your cutting table. My dining table is round and I use a fold up cutting table which is better than having to get on the floor. My mother used to put her leafs in her table and had a great place to cut and she sewed on hers since it was an actual dining room. I was really stupid when I built my house to not put more space in the eating area and get that stupid round table. I also ditched the formal dining room for a bigger living room (not bright). My round table has sentimental value to my dh and I am stuck with it forever. If I had a rectangular table in the kitchen area I could cut on it.
I stash all patterns that you like and reuse. I love that floral top and am glad you are using some of your great now tnt patterns again. By the time I get around to making something the pattern is long since oop. Take care. mssewcrazy

  16. Love the new combo. That's a pattern I don't have and probably should. As far as sewing in an apartment, I always think dining rooms are overrated. If you only get one bedroom, the dining room can make a great sewing room space. Especially if you also have a bar to eat on.

  17. That is such a great jacket/fabric combo. The fit is just beautiful.

  18. I was just telling my roomie at the PR weekend that you made your underwear from the leftover knit fabrics. I said I wanted to do that too since I have quite a bit of knit leftovers. I've just ordered some picot edge elastic and a Kwik Sew panty pattern. Do you mind if I ask you which pattern you use for yours? You gave me a great idea to make my own! Thanks.

  19. Carol, the base pattern is KS 2908 but I've modified it. If you look for my review on PR, you'll see what I did with links to pics. If the pics aren't working, let me know and I'll fix the links. I had some issues a while back and I haven't gone back and updated all the links in my reviews.

  20. Debbie, glad you are sewing (it is therapy) but mostly glad you are here. I apologize, my life has been hectic lately, and I somehow missed your post of your life changes. I just caught on, and have been paging back, post by post, until I found what happened. I hate to sound so odd, but I am wondering... are the dogs going with you? K

Thank you for each and every comment. I appreciate them all, but I have to be honest and let you know that I'm usually bad about answering questions. I hope you understand that there just isn't enough time in the day to do everything I want to do.
