Colette Sorbetto - Meh

So it's done and I'm not loving it. (But I'm rocking those groovy candy PJ pants, right??)

It's not that I don't like the top *in theory,* but this one is too big on me. I should've started with a smaller size as it seems to be drafted to sit wide across the shoulders (which is apparent in hindsight as I look at the pattern photo again). It also feels too big at the underarms, and the hips are doing that Judy Jetson flare thing. I don't need extra flare at the hips — I bring enough of my own to the table. ;-) Yes, technically I could take things in here and there, but I really don't feel like removing the armhole bindings so I'm not too motivated to try to fix it.

I'm going to toss it in the wash to see if it shrinks up a little. If not, I'll probably just wear it around the house since even with its faults, it's still comfortable and perfect for those really hot & humid days we'll be having soon.

I'm not sure if I'm going to try it again. I think some easy TNT knit tops are calling my name first.

  1. I'm posting as Anonymous as my google account isn't recognizing me....weird.
Anyway - I see what you mean - could it be good for pjs? I'm a fan of the TnT knit top myself. I looove being able to sit down at the serger and put one together and know (well, pretty well) how it will turn out.
Hang in on the job search,
    take care,

  2. In the first photo, I thought 'why doesn't she like it?' Then in the second I see the Jetson edge. You probably never planned to wear it without something over it so it still could be more use than house apparel. Exellent sewing nevertheless.

  3. Your binding is beautifully done and the fabric is wonderful. I see the little flare at the bottom. Why not make some alterations on the pattern now, just straighten that side seam, then lay it aside. That way if you want to tackle it again, the alterations are already present. I think the front pleat and color are very flattering to you.

  4. Sorry you aren't feeling the love on this one. I like the addition of the buttons. I'm wondering if it might work under a jacket?

  5. It's a shame that you're not loving this because the close-ups show that your construction work is superb! I do think it could look lovely with the right outfit - definitely worthy of venturing outside the house in!

  6. There seems to be more hip flare on you, than on the pattern photos. I was thinking of making this top to use up some some yardage remnant, but the thought of making binding (my first attempts were okay, but annoying)....what width did you make?

  7. I'm with you on tops with hip flares. I wonder if this can be tucked? Not that I can tuck myself, never quite figured it out. I love that white-on-white print, though. You are looking great!

  8. Make it a sleep shirt..... woudl be cool for summer sleeping! I have the pattern printed out and am going to give it a try this week while the girls are at church camp. Maybe after I get my Mother of the Bride dress completed. ;)

I think it looks nice and I woudl give it another whirl in a smaller size....

Can you just take up the underarm seam and fold it over and stitch it down without removing the binding?

  9. Gosh, from the photos it looks just fine. I'm loving the fabric, and the Jetson thing really is not that obvious. The top looks so fresh and so cool. Plus it will look good with a cardi or jacket when layering time comes once again to hot sunny Florida. Give this poor unloved top a chance, Debbie. Your sewing is so beautiful.

  10. I find Colette Patterns in general to be drafted wide through the shoulders. I was thinking about making this one, too (hey, free pattern), but I will definitely take your issues into consideration.

Yours looks cute, but I feel the same way about things that just don't fit right. How about saving it for the fall under a jacket or sweater?

  11. I actually think this looks pretty good on you. There is something about a slightly large garment, and I do mean slightly, that makes the underneath body look a bit smaller. When I first clicked on the blog I thought,"dayum, she has lost some serious weight and looks great." Don't be so hard on your self. This blouse looks great IMO.

  12. I think it looks beautiful !
Your sewing is exquisite as usual. If you are not pleased with the flare as others suggested it would be great tucked in or under a jacket or cardie. But as I said before I think it is beautiful as is and would hate that you wore it at home only :(

  13. Love love how you centered the print on the button placket and then how you put a button on each circle. So cute! And I LOVE that fabric.

  14. You know what? I really like it on you! Like some others, I couldn't understand why you didn't care for it. I like how you used the dots for the button/placket area. The flare is not much.. it says easy fitting, and cool for summer to me. Just comfortable in the heat. Well done.

  15. I think it turned out great and would look just fine under a jacket.

  16. It looks good from where I'm sitting! ;)

  17. Well, I'd be happy with the little hip flare. With my ample midsection, the extra fabric would be welcome when sitting. I think your top is fantastic and, thanks to you, I've downloaded the pattern. I hope my turns out as well as yours!

  21. WEll, I like it. I think it is very flattering. And we know it is well made.

  22. I'm cracking up over your post because it mirrors my work last night. I traced the pattern and made my usual adjustments based on pattern measurements, sewed a muslin with some cotton I bought at a discount house, and tweaked the pattern a bit more. I made a second version in a tan linen, and it's a little wide in the shoulders, there's that underarm thing even though I thought I adjusted, so I thought, "Ah, I'll just toss it in the wash..."

As I was working on the muslin, however, I realized that I had really snagged some awesome cotton, so I went back and turned it into pajamas. I picked out the pleat from the bust to the waist for sleeping comfort, and made a fast pair of pajama pants to match. Super comfy for sleeping!

  23. I agree that this is very flattering on you and thought the same that Bunny said about you having lost some serious weight.
Looks like a good one also for wearing under a jacket. Cool for this summer. Great job on the binding as well.

  24. I like your button addition.

  25. I think it is a very nice top and I love the centred buttons. It would be a pity to relegate it to house wear. I don't like hip flares either, but I have certainly seen worse.

  26. Debbie, I love the fabric and your work is impecable. I agree with the comments that maybe under a jacket. Put it in time out for a while and think about it.
Also, wanted to thank you for getting back to me with an answer to my question on the previous post. Anne

  27. OMGosh...I remember those buttons! They are perfect for that top!

  28. Looks fine to me. You could layer it with a clingy singlet underneath.

  29. I love love love your fabric/button combo. The fitting on my own Sorbetto is still a little boxy, so I understand where you're coming from. But I think it looks very nice on you. :)

  30. Your detail work is awesome. Sorry it didn't work out for you. :( Maybe under a cardi or belted? I'm thinking about sewing one, so thanks for your tips!

Thank you for each and every comment. I appreciate them all, but I have to be honest and let you know that I'm usually bad about answering questions. I hope you understand that there just isn't enough time in the day to do everything I want to do.
