I'm on FIRE

This is just a drive-by post because I've spent my WHOLE EVENING playing with my new toy, which arrived today — one day earlier than expected, thank you Amazon!!

It's everything I expected and more. I love it! It is SO WORTH the $199 price tag (plus $79/year for Amazon Prime to get full benefits), esp. compared to a iPad. It's not an iPad, but I'm not really convinced I want a full tablet. I mean I have a computer (or three) and any real computing I'd do on real keyboard. But for fun, entertainment/reading, this thing is going to rock. It was super easy to set up, found my home wi-fi immediately, and there's a good manual on-board if you want it or your fingertips to play around if you don't.

On Saturday, I finally entered the smartphone game for my own phone when I bought Alex a new Razr and took his Droid X. I had thought I was going to get the new phone for once, but the differences between the Razr and the Droid X were just not enough to sway me, plus knowing my Fire was on its way, so I caved and let him take the Razr. Yes, 4G is noticeably faster than 3G, but I'm not going to be streaming anything on the phone and, frankly, the screen is just too dang small for these no-more-birthdays eyes. The Fire streams beautifully from the Cloud with no blips at all. The screen and overall size are perfect. Phone for calls, texts, mobile pics, and quickie apps on the go. Fire for real reading and the fun stuff during lunch or while watching TV.

Ask questions in the comments if you're thinking of getting one and there's something you're curious about and I'll answer them in the next day or so. But if you're mostly over the fence, just do it. You'll love it. :-)

  1. You almost gave me a heart attack ;) I'm so glad you're not literally burning up. May I beg for a full review?

  2. I'm so glad you love it! Mine is on the UPS truck for delivery today. Should I call in sick and stay home and wait for it? Maybe not!! But there better not be anyone standing in my way at 5 PM because I can't wait to get home to play with it!!

  4. Congrats--fun, fun, fun! I have a lowly Nook, but it is exactly what I want as a reader. I love being able to download books and carry them all with me.

  7. I want to get one for my mom (78) who can be technology-ignorant. My library is hosting "get to know your e-readers" during the noon hour that I plan to take her to first. I'm convinced once she knows how to use a Kindle-type reader, she will want it. --and magically 'learn' how to use it.
And yes, I thought about buying it first but that never works with my mom so I have to go the more difficult route of waiting.
    Thanks for the review.

  8. Stop it! Stop it! I'm trying to resist...Dang it...Okay take some pictures of it will ya. Have you put a magazine on it? Wouldn't it be great to have all of the Threads issues on it?

Enjoy your Fire. I don't think it will be long before I have one. I don't think I can resist.

  9. I have a reg. Kindle, with the keyboard and e-ink, and I LOVE it. I am crazy interested in a Fire, but my one hang-up is the lack of e-ink. I love my e-ink. I love how I can read in bright sunlight (it's brilliant for vacation reading, not that I go on vacation often though!). Have you read much to determine if the Fire will strain your eyes?

  12. How Timely! I just got mine (birthday gift from DH) yesterday! I haven't had the time to explore it much yet, but I'm eager to get into it and see what this baby can do! (And surely I can't be the only one who had the theme song from 2001 in my head as I pulled it out of the box?)

  13. Awesome! Looks like a lot of fun. I'm tempted by a Kindle myself, but I think I would prefer a mid-size device -- bigger than my iPhone but smaller than a regular Kindle. I don't think I can handle hauling the weight of the Fire around on a regular basis.

  14. Got mine! Love It. The size is perfect for taking with me. But I still like my old Kindle for reading books. I think the e-ink is easier on the eyes when reading for a long period of time.

  15. I got mine too, and I can see that until the newness wears off there won't be much sewing getting done!
:-D I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! Favorite thing so far - reading in bed without the light on! Least favorite ... can't think of one!

  16. Glad to hear good things about it. i think i will get one for my son to use at school for an e-reader. having other apps available will make it just that more useful for him.

I am also considering getting a motorola xoom for me. since mine will be used mostly at home, i like the bigger size for watching movies, reading web pages, etc.

I have a droid 2 and totally love it. I use it more than my computer now. when i need to type long docs or read a lot of stuff, i use the desk top. however, email, facebook, blog reading... usually done on the phone.

yes, i am a gadget junkie

  18. Ive been debating whether to get one for my 7 year old daughter, who is very into technology and reading. Just not sure if that's too expensive a gift for a child her age.

Thank you for each and every comment. I appreciate them all, but I have to be honest and let you know that I'm usually bad about answering questions. I hope you understand that there just isn't enough time in the day to do everything I want to do.
