Spitting Nails

So, I finally get a weekend to sew and it's a wadder. Looks pretty good in this pic, eh?

Hah! Looks can be deceiving.

The pattern:

On me:

Closer:

I did all the right things — muslin, FBA, - even taking photos along the way for the long blog entry I'd be writing. But my mistake was not making a quick second muslin. Lesson learned: one should not be too confident.

But even if this didn't have some weird boob anomalies going on, I still wouldn't wear it. The fabric, while pretty to look at, is horrible to wear. Every small move ends up with Velcro butt:

And Zillie has a very slippery cover, so there would really be no cure except to fully line whatever you make from this fabric. At least I won't be obsessing trying to save this.

That's two in a row now. Time for a TNT knit top I think. Or a cocktail.

Happy New Year Y'all!

  1. How sad...

I have some of that fabric and I love the colors. Will I have to underline it? or line it? or what?

  2. Rrrrr... learning humility is such a pain. Me, I warmed up with my TNT KS A-line skirt and it worked out, but a simple bias A-line with CF and CB seams so I could fit the sides was a wadder, as I didn't have enough fabric to perfectly match the side seams. Thought it was OK, then... ick. Meanwhile the TNT KS robe is on the cutting board. Keep chugging along :)

  3. So, what type of fabric are we staying away from today? =)

  4. Happy New Year to you and yours. What if you wore a silky cami underneath and didn't tuck it in? The blouse just might behave then. Post your pictures anyway, it will still be instructive.

  5. Happy New Year, Debbie. It is pretty fabric, tho. Sorry it didn't work out, but great to see you back in the blogosphere.

Sorry to see that this ended up being a wadder...hopefully you will get a chance to get a new knit top made up!

  7. It happens to the best of us, unfortunately. Happy New Year and sewing successes.

  8. if it makes you feel any better, it looks great, and I don't really think that the "weird boob anomalies" are as bad as you seem to think they are. On the other hand, I wouldn't want my clothes feeling like they were velcroed on either! Wore dd's "Guess" jacket to church today. It has a stand-up collar, and was just uncomfortable for me. That's one problem with sewing some things, if I'd attempted to MAKE something like it, I would have been very frustrated with the outcome.
Good to see your post. Happy New Year.

  9. I would for sure try it over a woven and also a silky tank /cami just in case the velcro could be tamed enough to get a few wears. It is such a pretty jacket. At least some sewing has to be disaster status though. I always remember the piles of rtw that never make the cut if I try buying something and don't feel as badly when something I make hits the donate pile. I wore a rtw suit to church today that I hate (mail order), had to alter, doesn't fit worth a flip and cost $125. It will be donated when I make or find something better to wear. So just move on - you have so many nice clothes you have sewn beautifully. Glad to see you are ok- just busy working at your job. We all miss your sewing exploits and lessons. mssewcrazy

  10. "Spitting Nails" - I thought you might be renovating again. Phew, only sewing. :)

As for the fabric - silly fabric! Fabrics like these should come with a warning label, "I may look pretty but I'm really wickedly evil. Do not buy me, I SUCK!"

  12. Happy New Year! Now, why not wear it as an overshirt? With a matching slinky cami underneath - wouldn't it fix both problems?

  13. What a shame! Make a quick cute knit top or two right away to get the bad karma out of your sewing room :). It happens to us all.
    Happy New Year!

  14. That is too bad about that fabric! I don't see wonkiness about the boobs, but it would be too uncomfortable to wear fabric that you constantly fear is riding up. Knit tops will clear your palate! They are my cure for a bad project as well.

  15. The fabric looked like a woven cotton (like a quilting cotton) in the photo, but it's acting like a nasty quiana knit... what IS it?
Such a shame... it's a great print! And I like the pattern too.

  16. I hate it when you think you've broken a dry spell, only to have the thing refuse to behave!

Happy New Year, Debbie; better luck on the next project.

  18. Happy New Year! May this be your only wadder of 2009! What is the fabric fiber content? What could it be recycled into?

  19. I vote for a cocktail AND a knit top! Nothing can go wrong with a mai tai and those serger knives, right? ;)

  21. On Americal idol they are always spouting about "poor song choice" Unfortunately, we all make a "poor fabric choice" from time to time and it ruins everything. But, it's only fabric and some time (which we always chalk up to experience)It's not the end of everything, but it's still a PITA! What do they say,? "Third time's a charm"
