The Broke Woman's Myrtle - In Progress

I don't have $14-18 to shell out for patterns at the moment but I was kind of interested in Colette Patterns' newest, Myrtle. So I had a look through the sale pattern catalogs at Hancock's last weekend, thinking I could find something close, since Myrtle is a pretty basic style.

And, voila! Plus sleeves (which, unfortunately, are missing from the Colette version).

Pretty close match, eh? Just goes to show there's really nothing new under the sun.

This one's not done yet. I still have to hem the sleeves and since it's a crappy thin rayon knit, I need to let it sit/stretch on Zillie for a couple of days before I hem the bottom.

Hopefully, I'll get back to the dress mid-week and have some pics before next weekend, both of the dress on me and how I used my Otto TNT tee to make sure the KS would fit.

  1. Yes I have seen that new pattern too and thought I am sure I have something similar in my stash. You have done a great job - your version looks gorgeous on Tilly.

  2. Thanks for pointing out the KS pattern! The reason I didn't buy the Myrtle was the gathers at the waist, the KS pattern avoids that too and the sleeves an added bonus - winner!

  3. There's so many similar patterns and many times we can find alternative to what we like the look of and even when we hunt through our pattern stashes we can usually 'make it work' as Tim Gunn would say LOL. I think our dress is looking great on Tilly as well and I also love the look of that fabric :)

  4. That print is so interesting that it's almost exciting. The dress looks good, too!

I recently cleaned out lots of pattern duplicates in my stash.

  5. So glad to read this on your blog. I have this pattern and have debated between this one and another for a summer dress. I think I will use this one! LOL! Nothing like a little peer pressure! And I also purchased the fabric that your used and was disappointed with the quality of it..... I used it last summer for a dress and it ended up making the goodwill trip. It felt more sleepwear than dress...... LOL

  6. And you didn't have to pay a huge price! I find so many Indie patterns are just remakes of existing Big Four patterns as you have proven. Are they really that "Indie"?

Dress looks great and the fabric is awesome.

  7. D'oh! I completely forgot about that KS pattern. Oh well. I'm interested in seeing how you used your TNT tee to fit the bodice of the dress. Great fabric!

  8. Wow, great version. You didn't even have to tape those pages together!
I would pick this just because it has the sleeves anyway.
Leaving it to drapw is something that is easy to forget, I'm usually too happy to have a new thing and forget that it will find its own level. Thanks for reminding me that its always faster to do it right than do it over.

I can't wait to see it on you.

  11. Oooh, I like that pattern. Good choice!

  12. You're absolutely right, there is nothing new under the sun. I've put myself on a 'no new patterns' restriction because of this. Everything is so rehashed these days, just different fabric or variations. Your ingenuity saved you money and produced a new and improved 'Myrtle'.

  13. Sleeves are good. It's just too cold with central air otherwise. I like your fabric.

  14. Oh yeah, I like the KS one better. No gathers at the waist. I really love that fabric! Sorry it was not the best quality.

  15. I couldn't see what the fuss is about this pattern when there are similar patterns available which are less expensive. I prefer the sleeves.

  21. I'm hoping to try and draft the cowl neck myself, from the Moneta pattern - it's not that I CAN'T afford the money for the pattern, just that I don't want to when it's such a simple alteration.

  22. I was holding out on buying that pattern for the same reason. I am sure I have something nearly like it in my stash. The KS version's addition of sleeves is great for me, as is the omission of the waist gathers. No need for more fluff there. I'll have to go dig through my patterns. Who knows? I may even have that exact Kwik Sew!

  23. Exactly why I don't get excited by indie/blogger patterns. First, they are usually very basic. Second, I usually have the style in my stash or can frankenpattern it. Third, the price is usually a bit much for something in which I'm required to supply the paper and ink. I hear that often the directions are good but I already know how to sew.

Thank you for each and every comment. I appreciate them all, but I have to be honest and let you know that I'm usually bad about answering questions. I hope you understand that there just isn't enough time in the day to do everything I want to do.
