Turner Two
I finally was able to revisit the Cashmerette Turner dress (pattern link HERE (nayy) and previous review HERE).
This fabric, from Fabricmart, sat in my stash for exactly 4 minutes before it was on the cutting table with Turner pattern pieces on it. It's a fun, summery ITY print with just enough body. Side note: I wish Fabricmart would stop labeling all ITYs the same and divide them up a bit by weight.
I made no changes from my last pattern modifications (narrowing the shoulders/neckline) except to lower the front vee about an inch, which equals a net 1-inch raise from the original pattern neckline. At this level, it's not quite cleavage revealing, which does well for me at work. I also added about an inch to the skirt length for no particular reason except to change it up. Sewing is a fickle wench. :-)
In addition to the few minor pattern issues I mentioned in my original Turner review, there are a couple of "truing" mistakes, which are easily corrected. By mentioning them here, maybe Jenny of Cashmerette will make note of them for the next print runs/editions of the pattern.
First, the sleeve hem allowance is not shaped correctly for a perfect fold-up.
Second, the side seams finish in a point at the hem edge. I trimmed the point so it blended into the curve of the hem edge, which makes for a smoother hem turn-up on a circle-ish skirt.
No mistakes here! I'm just showing off the nice point at the vee. :-)
I remembered to add my pass card loop. I just love having these when I don't have pockets.
And I added a self-fabric sash (interfaced with scraps of Perfect Fuse), which means I really didn't need the pass card loop. Hey, it's nice to have options! With that sash in place, I'm easily imagining a hack to Turner into a faux wrap dress. Excuse the bad pun. Maybe it won't take me another 6-7 months for my next go.
Happy Friday! I'm hoping to continue this weekend with my next sewing project.

What an absolutely lovely dress and the colours are lovely on you. That would look great as a wrap. Xx
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteReally pretty dress. How fabulous to have TNT pattern like the Turner so you can whip up a dress when new fabric shows up on your doorstep. I liked your pun.
ReplyDeleteHaha about the pun, Audrey. TNTs *are* nice, but somehow I'm always distracted by the non-TNTs. I know better and ignore myself. :-)
DeleteThe pass card loop is such a clever idea! I also really like the addition of the sash; it's a great touch. Lovely dress!
ReplyDeleteThanks Masha. I do love the card loop, but it also means some items are office wear only ... unless I hang my car keys from it. Haha.
DeleteI really love this dress and fabric combos! <3 <3 Looks so good on you!
ReplyDeleteThanks Andie. This dress does have a few magic qualities.
DeletePretty!
ReplyDeleteThanks Vicki!
DeleteI have the same fabric and made a mock wrap dress late last year. This fabric is all kinds of awesome and your dress shows it off nicely.
ReplyDeleteThanks L. Yes, this is one of the good ITYs. I wish it was easier to tell them apart - weight-wise - online.
DeleteLove this Turner - I have this pattern but haven't made it up yet :) yours has certainly spurred me to get on that! Thank you for that great pic of how you expanded the shoulder and raised the V a bit - I'm bookmarking this for future reference for sure ;)
ReplyDeleteKathleen, don't wait! It's a great pattern. :-) Making those shoulder and neck depth adjustments are very easy.
DeleteSo, SO agree with you about how valuable more information about the weight of the ITY would be! I just bought some white and some black ITY (from Fabric Mart, pretty soon I'll just have to give them their own column on my budget!) to use as bodice linings when I get a thinner than expected ITY. Lovely dress. The sash really enhances it. Thank you for the information about truing...This pattern is in my "sometime soon" queue.
ReplyDeleteKaren, I was just about to do that too. I really wanted to line the skirt of this dress to eliminate the need for a slip, but I didn't have anything suitable for lining this ITY. Solids. I need solids!
DeleteAhhh Debbie! Cute dress! I have that fabric in my stash (Fabricmart junkie...that's why I can't go visit Gaylen..lol) Thanks for the inspiration...must go dig it out now! I also keep forgetting about your badge loop...ingenious idea!
ReplyDeleteThanks Mary! I love this fabric. The colors are not my usual range, but I'm branching out. This fabric didn't even make it to stash status. I hope you get to use yours soon.
DeleteLove your dress and that colorful happy print. You look fabulous!
ReplyDeleteThank you Tomasa!
DeleteThat fabric! SWOON!!! It looks so good on you!
ReplyDeleteThank you, thank you. SWOON ... hahaha, love it! :-)
DeleteLovely dress that really suits you, great print too! So when your mojo goes it really goes, send that determination to England PLEASE.
ReplyDeleteI just got it back ... I can't send it off to England now. Hahaha! I hope yours turns up soon.
DeleteThank you. It's a lovely dress and fabric and a great review. I also read your first review and the comments. I bought this pattern (paper version) and am wary about starting as I had a lot of problems still ongoing with the Concord tee around the shoulder mainly. I see you said that you didn't think this pattern had the forward shoulder that was built into the Concord (and which was way too much for me). I'm tall but like another poster I'm relatively short in the bodice and long in the lower torso so a toile is definitely in order.
ReplyDeleteI do prefer this pattern to the Concord, likely for the reasons you've pointed out. I don't have a forward shoulder (opposite, really) and the neckline is too wide as-is for me. I still had to adjust the Turner neckline, but it's done now (and easy) so it's ready to go.
DeleteLovely dress. So cheerful and summery!
ReplyDeleteThank you Marianne!
DeleteLove this dress. Such a pretty print and it looks great on you.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jean! I'm glad I bought this print as it's much better in person too!
DeleteThis dress looks fabulous on you! Love the fabric.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Looks like the fabric is a winner. Everyone loves it. :-)
DeleteThank you so much for this. I'll probably be moving to Florida in the next year, and I was wondering about sewing with knits in such a warm climate. I love every one of your choices for this dress--fabric, raised neck, lowered hem. Brava.
ReplyDeleteWow! I'm also in the love the fabric group. You look stunning! I agree it would be nice to know the weight of the ITY. I think it's Peggy Sager who always lists her fabrics by oz. it really helps once you know a 8 oz. is fairly stable compared to the thin 4 oz. BTW, when we were in St. Pete I dropped by Jay's. Nice to see a fabric store selling garment fabric.
ReplyDeletePretty fabric, and really nice dress! Your badge loop is genius. Glad to see you got some sewjo back, at least for a while. Mine's still big-time gone.
ReplyDeleteThat fabric looks lovely on you, and that perfect V definitely deserves it's own close-up! Sewing in a loop for your pass card is ingenious :)
ReplyDeleteFabulous dress you are looking so beautiful hun

Thank you so much, for sharing your sewing & fitting of clothing, I can't tell you how much I appreciate it! I have similar fitting issues, so it is refreshing to see your clothing tweaks, & how you make them look VERY professional! My goal in making my clothing, is for it to be mistaken for something purchased at the most expensive clothing shops! (Except my fat dresses, some look expensive, others look less expensive, I don't like most store bought fat dresses, I'm particular to my specific muumuu pattern, but I like to tweak the designs.)
