Is it nap time yet?

I'm back to work today, where I can finally get some rest. LOL

I haven't sat on my butt this long since last Wednesday. I'm actually writing this post from work too. During my lunch hour people - it's OK. (One thing about being the firm's graphic designer, you get access to all sorts of websites and software that the rest of the peeps don't get. Hahaha!)

I'm still plugging away at unpacking, and will be for weeks to come. The shot of my sewing room the other day, with a sewing machine front and center, was completely impromptu — that's where the machine was just dumped by someone (not me!). I found my Featherweight in the garage yesterday. At least I found it.

I think I'm over the pain enough to share that my moving day was a complete disaster. First, they showed up more t han an hour late. Next, they "somehow" tripled the price. Needless to say, my bank account did not spontaneously triple in response. I was between a rock and hard place and frustrated beyond belief. The short version of a very long story that also involves the stupid company actually calling the POLICE on me (who, BTW, just laughed with me and stayed for a grand total of 45 seconds), is that I hired two of the moving company's way underpaid workers to work for me privately, along with Alex and his friend, and a 26' truck I rented at U-Haul. It took all freakin' day/night (because by the time we actually started, it was already 2 PM), but we got it done. And without me having to give that crap company a dime.

That's Alex and Chili, my two red-headed boys, in the pool Saturday. I'm hoping to dive in tonight after work. I wonder, will my chocolate martini float?

  1. So happy for you that all your stuff is in its new home. Middle daughter moves every couple of years and the moving is always full of stupid adventure/surprises not so good ones.I am so glad you held your ground and did it without them. The pool is so nice looking and the dog and the boy look happy to be chilling out. We are glad you are able to get a moment to update; lots of us who are blog fans think about you while you are getting moved and are happy to hear how it is all going. mssewcrazy

  3. You got a pool? Wow that's brilliant. Moving house is made stressful by other people - you're there now - float away with that martini (or two).

  4. It seems that stories about moving nightmares are more common than good ones. Mine was pretty bad as well. At least it's done and you can move on. That pool looks pretty inviting after a long day at work.

  8. Now I know why I haven't moved in 27 years....and that was paid for by my former employer. So sorry it was such a hassle but turned out ok in the end. It's wine and nap time!!

  9. Wow -- you so deserve that chocolate martini -- make it a double! Good on you for coming up with your own solution to get the job done and on your budget, not theirs. Ingenious!! Can't wait until we can get in our pool, too.

  11. Evidently, that's a common scam, only I think you got off easy: they usually up the price AFTER your stuff is on the truck and they get to your new destination.

The key (for those reading) is to get a BINDING estimate. Very rarely do companies give a BINDING estimate - but search till you find one.

    I hope you settle quickly!

  13. Ouch! Moving can be a nightmare, good for you for standing up to the moving company and getting moved in without them. I hope you enjoy your new home. Just one question: How do you expect to get any sewing done with a fabulous pool to enjoy?

  14. If my sketchy memory recalls, you're in Fla right?

Please please please! file a complaint against the moving company with DACS (Dept of Agriculture & Consumer Services). 1-800-HELP-FLA (435-7352) or online at https://csapp.800helpfla.com/CSPublicApp/Complaints/FileComplaint.aspx

  19. OMG, what a horror!!!! So glad you found a way around the moving company and managed to get it done.

  20. I'm sorry. I didn't realize that you could catch chaotic, unorganized, frustrating, more expensive than you thought moving simply by reading each other's blogs. Shall we make a pact? Never again?

  21. Totally a reason not to move ever again. {Same place -over 20 years}
Unless I can get my hands on some really buff guys who lift things with one hand. . . .

  22. I don't have any words of commiseration, I do think you kicked butt with your response to some slimy people. You laughed with the cops, and hired away the moving company's workers!!! I have visions of picketing them with funny signs that ridicule them and their evil business practice, but I am not clever enough to make a really funny sign. Anyway, good going and take that nap.

  23. Glad to hear you came out of it "intact". Must have been a "moving kind of weekend". We also moved my oldest dd (and her future dh) into their recently purchased "new" home. Fortunately they haven't accumulated too much "stuff" yet - not to mention he's definitely NOT the type to hang onto stuff, and they moved from a 2-bedroom condo, so . . . .
Looking forward to your future sewing posts.

  24. Good for you... sticking to your guns! So to speak... as long as the "officers" didn't have to pull out theirs. Seems to me you ought to call the local Better Business Bureau! They thought they had you in the corner! Sounds like you did what you needed to do!

  25. Congrats on the move and the new place--the pool looks lovely. :)

Thank you for each and every comment. I appreciate them all, but I have to be honest and let you know that I'm usually bad about answering questions. I hope you understand that there just isn't enough time in the day to do everything I want to do.
