Who Lives in a Pineapple Under the Sea

Spongebob Squarepants!!

Or, my muslin for Butterick 5678.

Moving along from the trainwreck that used to be my blog and email, after running errands much of the day, I finally got up to the sewing room to steal more patterns work on more office clothes. (Sorry, I just couldn't help that one.) This is my muslin for B5678, which is a multi-cup pattern. I wish *every* top pattern was a multi-cup pattern.

I measured myself (something I have to do now before each new item, since the measurements keep moving) and I'm definitely now squarely in a 16 for upper chest. I blended from the 16 to the 18 for waist and hip, and that was it. I still have to try out the sleeve, but even if that has to be adjusted, it ain't no big deal. And I need to shorten the back between shoulder and armpit due to super-erect posture, which is always a fit issue with woven button-front shirts, but that's also an easy fix.

Since this fits but is actually on the near side of snug, I will sew the sideseams with a little more ease. In the real fabric, of course. Spongebob is cool, but not very work appropriate — even on Fridays.

A few last words on The Drama. First, thank you for your support. It's been a weird couple of days. And for those of you who are getting flamed on your blogs, I wish that wasn't happening.

Second, this person posted a photo which she purports proves copyright infringement. What it proves is that — OMG — we both "designed" a perfect 4.5" x 3.75" rectangle, as part of a pocket to hold credit cards which, strangely, are all the same size too. You can't see the details in her photo but if you could, it would show that another of my pattern pieces she claims is a duplicate of hers is actually NOT the same size. As I said earlier, she must be using some kind of ruler I've never seen. What her photo shows me is how different these pieces are and that when one is looking through the eyes of a green monster, one sees whatever they wish. I'm also wondering where's the comparison of my other 13 pieces to her other 4? Could it be that they are different? Hmmm.

I will leave all the crap comments on yesterday's post because I think they speak volumes about the authors, but now I'm done. Any further anonymous or thinly disguised slanderous comments against me — and especially my family — will be deleted.

  1. Sorry there's been so much negativity. Even if this person firmly believes you copied her pattern, there is a proper way to address the issue. I think your wallet is great and I hope to order a copy if our family budget ever loosens up a little.

Keep on sewing! It must be such an adventure to find what works for your new body.

  2. Yeah, just keep on sewing is right!
That shirt is going to look super cute.

  3. Take look at a site called Regretsy for all the CRAP posted on Etsy and their utter lack of monitoring resellers, etc. I think you did 'due diligence' in making your pattern your own. I was impressed with the work you did to perfect the design. So many people on Esty are just whack jobs (present company excluded). Team Debbie all the way!

  4. Wow! I missed all the drama from yesterday and just went back to read it! I am so sorry for your experience! I make felt food on Etsy and my breakfast set WAS designed by me but there are only so many ways that you can make a fried egg, bacon and pancakes out of felt. So mine look similar to others out there as well. Keep your head up! It will pass.

  5. Wow Debbie, that fit is looking really good on your Sponge Bob top. I'm sorry about the crap that's been flying your way lately. I hope everything resolves itself soon.

  6. So do you have a matching skirt for the blouse or are you going to use one of the skirts you've already made? And seriously you should give Vogue 1247 a look...it's a great skirt especially with the interesting pockets...and would work well with your new wardrobe.

    BTW, stand strong okay!

  7. I haven't kept up with your blog as much as I would like lately, and wow, you've been dealt a lot lately. I'm so sorry to hear that - on the positive side, you're looking marvelous!

I don't know you other than online, but I've got to say that I never believe someone spouting accusations who doesn't have the guts to give their real identity. I hope this gets resolved in your favor, in the meantime, know that you have lots of people who believe in your honesty and integrity.

And thank your son for his service!

  9. Debbie - I just wanted to let you know I bought your wallet pattern and I love it and I'm in the process of making it right now. I'm sorry you're having to deal with all of this. I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your blog and how much I've learned from you in the last 18 months since I started sewing again after a long hiatus. And I should also tell you how much I appreciate all the coverstitch machine information you have on your blog - it has been such a help to me. So I hope none of this gets you down. Just wanted to throw some support your way.

  10. I just recently started following your blog. Congrats on all your new clothes you make! awesome! I love your wallet pattern and purchased it. I have bought ALOT of wallets and made alot from free tutorials as well. I don't know who the other wallet belongs to that is claiming this hers, but I haven't seen any patterns like yours. I love the complete details and pattern pieces!!!

  11. LOVE the Spongebob muslin! In regard to this wallet pattern issue, the accuser stated that s/he would allow people to download her/his pattern for comparison, but how would one do this as hiding behind "anonymous " doesn't give us the option to search for that pattern in question? I may have missed a link or etsy shop information but I would like to view both patterns before making up my mind in determining which pattern is right for me.
I am a new follower and have been exploring your blog off and on this week. I am not a well. educated seamstress as most of my sewing has been self taught. I have never heard of a coverstitch machine before reading your blog. I am looking forward to continuing to expand my sewing horizons.
If any other followers have good suggestions for other blogs and sites I can use to learn more please feel free to send me links! Thanks in advance for the help.

  12. Debbie,

I'm so glad to see you make this pattern. It is sitting on my worktable waiting to be muslined. It's gonna look great on you, I am sure, and can't wait to see the final product.

The other *crapola*? All I can say is some people have waaay too much time on their hands.

    Keep smilin'!

  13. Keep your chin up! Even if you did 'copy' the design it is still not copyright infringement.
So many negative comments by people who are not brave enough to put their names next to them. Funny that.

  14. Maybe "anonymous" ahould take their own advice and "get honest themselves". How can they talk about honesty when they hide behind "anonymous" comments. Keep sewing Debbie, love all that you do!!

  15. Sigh. That's right, just keep on sewing and try your best to let it slide. Unfortunately, much stuff on Etsy is copied, the louder people claim to be Original Artists and the more likely it is that they lifted it from somewhere. And Etsy is only just waking up to their bad reputation on that level and trying to do something about it, and imho flloundering about a bit.

In fact, in sewing patterns, the design is often not much the point, every shirt needs 2 sleeves, every wallet has to contain the same size cards. The part that's most difficult to achieve is good instructions. And we already know you can do these really well, you've single-handedly gotten half the world to do FBAs by explaining them so clearly. You're my reference to everyone in that domain.

I heartily second the suggestion to soothe your nerves at regretsy :-). And do add plenty to the back of that shirt, you're very used to knit tops as opposed to wovens, don't forget you have to reach your arms forward quite a bit at work..

  16. Whoa - I miss one blog post & miss a major tempest! I'm sorry to see that you're dealing with this & hope it passes without more heartburn on your end.

By the way, I was relieved to see that Spongebob was a muslin! I thought, there's no way she's lost it, right? Whew!

  17. Hey Debbi. I'm sorry you're going through this right now, but remember, this too shall pass. Hang in there and stay strong.

As for the shirt, I think I've got this same pattern in my queue. What are you making it out of? And I love the the SpongeBob fabric. Makes doing a muslin fun. I'll have to remember that.

  18. Wow, so sorry you're going through such a sh*tstorm! (how's that for "unique punctuation"?). Yeesh. Hopefully this person goes away soon. :(

  19. It is a good thing your as busy as you are..it will help you not dwell on the wallet issue ect. I hope the people causing you a problem wander off and bother someone else. Some people just love to cause trouble..it is there hobby..lol. Copyright issues happen all the time with quilting. Similar but not identical. It is a compliment to each designer. Like wearing the same dress to an event..lol. Both of you look great.
    Like the new blouse pattern!!!

  21. Debbie: I missed the Drama until today (had time with coffee to sit down and read) and about fell off my computer chair. I'm mostly a lurker, but a periodic commenter. I'm really sorry this is happening to you and hope that it blows over soon. Keep on sewing!

  22. You are looking fabulous girl! I too am very sorry about the wallet nonsense.

  23. I'm guessing I'm the only guy that reads your blog. Why? I grew up around sewing, and can sew myself if I have to. Yes, I'm proud of that.

I don't know the whole story behind the wallet. I only know what you posted in your blog. For the sake of the awesome work you do, I could only suggest that you look into filing for a patten (copyright) for your line of purses and hand bags. I really don't think anyone could even come close to matching the quality you put into your work.

Don't let this issue with the wallet get you down. Didn't you talk your son through Marine Corp. Boot Camp? You told him to keep pushing! Be proud, and never give up! That's what you have to do here. We may just be USMC parents, but we are still part of a family!

  24. Infringement is a broad subject in intellectual property. Copyright protects a work not an idea because some ideas are so common that it’s almost impossible to claim a copyright to them. There are 16 pages of wallet designs on Etsy and it seems to me that many wallet designs have been out there for years.

  25. Hi Debbie--I too am usually a lurker, occasional commenter. I am so sorry the internet loons have come to roost on your blog/store. If those making accusations were truly the integrity-laden business professionals they claim to be, they would realize that the time and money spent pursuing this complaint far outweighs the potential benefit of investing the same time/money in simply making their product more marketable. "Slander the competition" does not seem to be a very sensible business plan, but maybe I'm naive.

I've seen enough of these type of kerfuffles on the internet to know that THEY are the ones who look like a**holes, not you. You and your family are a true inspiration to me, and if I ever put down my knitting needles to start sewing again, you are the first resource I'll turn to.

Keep your beautiful NONDOUBLE-chin up. ;) Mary

  26. I bet that ETSY wont do one thing about this issue. They don't really seem to care. I ordered an issue of Burda and it didn't come with the pattern sheets. I contacted the seller and they said they would send me them. I never got them and told them I wanted to return the magazine. They all but told me to shove it. After 3 months of dealing with them I finally complained to ESTY. I never got a response from them. I sent a 2nd complaint and still nothing. The seller is still selling Burdas and I am out $15.00. ETSY is in it for the money and really doesn't care what is being sold on their site. I would bet they don't even look into complaints.
I hope this all blows over soon.

  27. Debbie,

I have been a reader (aka lurker) for sometime. I know that you didn't copy anyone's pattern. I saw the process my self. Unless there is something I don't know aren't all credit cards all the same size? With all the hoopla I almost want to order on just because, even though I don't need it. :)

The best way I could think of to register my opinion on this matter was to order Debbie's pattern. 'nuff said! my vote is registered! ;)
I'd been meaning to for ages but this just pushed me to stop procrastinating. Thanks Debbie!

Thank you for each and every comment. I appreciate them all, but I have to be honest and let you know that I'm usually bad about answering questions. I hope you understand that there just isn't enough time in the day to do everything I want to do.
