Working Girl

Well I made it and I'm ready for more. Well, after a good night's sleep first.

I'm working in the tallest building in this photo, and the view out my window is what you see here — the river. I really like everything a lot so far — the people, the office, the job, the pay.

My first day went very well. This morning I signed a bunch of papers acknowledging policies, etc., got my official key card which gets me in and out of the office, ladies room, and parking garage. Then I had another tour and a re-introduction to co-workers. Next, it was a one-on-one with an IT guy for an overview of the firm's email, file management, and various other internal systems. That went fast, since it's pretty easy stuff for a computer geek like me. ;-) I'm definitely upgrading my cell or buying an iPad with one of my first paychecks. I want to read blogs during my lunch break. lol

Speaking of lunch … I didn't have to worry about forgetting it since I was taken out to a nice restaurant a few blocks away. (I had yummy mushroom quiche and mixed greens salad). The lunch I brought today will be waiting in the office fridge for me tomorrow. Hopefully, no one works late and gets hungry. But if for some reason it disappears, there's a nice little cafe on the second floor of the building and a big newsstand in the lobby. (Both great for rainy days!)

I made it home from work in less than 30 minutes and after giving the pups a big hello, I raced upstairs to get rid of the pantyhose and closed-toe shoes. I can't remember the last time I wore PH *all day.* I haven't decided if I'm wearing any tomorrow. The other females in the office are both bare-legged and hosed. Ha ha, not quite what I meant. It's not that the PH were uncomfortable, they are just a huge PITA on restroom trips. (TMI?)

After changing, going through email, and calling my mom, I went out to Stein Mart and promptly spent $300. OMG. I am NOT keeping everything, especially since none of it is bottom pieces. But I did get some necklaces and shoes along with some other cute stuff. Maybe I'll have enough energy for a photo shoot tomorrow night.

I just spent an hour trying on new and old stuff to come up with SOMETHING to wear tomorrow. During the process, I decided that tomorrow night I need to spend time in the sewing room ripping apart and taking in some too-big skirts. Even if I can only do one a night, that will still put me ahead.

At this point (11:15 PM), I'm dragging. I went to bed on time last night and then just laid there wide-awake for 90 minutes. Arghhh. My mind would not shut down. While I technically got the absolute minimum amount of sleep I need to function, I know that's not going to be enough tonight. But I don't think I'll have a problem dozing off right away.

And with that, I bid you Good Night!

  3. Congrats on your first day!!! I've been a stay home mom for so long I wouldn't even know how to react.
One skirt a night? Sounds good to me!!

  4. Wow I can't remember what its like to wear PH all day either. I am an at home mum and it has been a while for me. I hope the getting up and joining the commuters goes well - that's the tricky bit for me, changing morning routines.

    Congratulations on your first day!

  7. Definitely a good idea to get plenty of sleep when your brain is having to absorb lots of new info (even if some of it isn't that new).
Yeah, that all sounds like it's doing really well :-). Do give up on the pantyhose, if it's not a mandatory work thing there's no reason to torture yourself with it. You made an effort the first day, you appreciate the job, that's all anyone is interested in.

You know it's not reasonable to spend that much without ending up with at least some of what you need.. We'll let you figure that one out for yourself. Swap some shoes for a skirt that fits today?
And please do hem that nice brown skirt before you take on something that'll be a lot longer, like deciding which skirts to take in and tackling that tedious task while half asleep. remember also that if you do lose weight further the skirt will get a bit longer, so do you really need a hem facing? Can you just slap on a bias strip for now?

  8. Congratulations for your new job. I am glad your first day went along pleasantly. I can imagine what it is like. Mind you, I'll soon be in the same situation. I'll shortly go back to work after an 8 year hiatus. I am glad as I'll be 50 next December and going back to work at that age is very rare in France at the moment.

  15. Congratulations! There are definite advantages to working outside the house. People and having to have a nice wardrobe is a plus in my book. The commute isn't too bad either. Good luck.

  16. How exciting, congratulations!
The tablet or iPad at the office is a must, mine slides under my keyboard perfectly for those mid day breaks.
I applaud your SteinMart finds. I have found that buying and altering to fit is a very efficient way to fill the easy gaps in my wardrobe. It just makes sense when working so much.
As for the ph, it sounds like it is entirly up to you. You can see what you are most comfortable with. It will be an adjustment either way.

  17. Always good to get that first day done :O)!

I know what my decision would be on the PH. If they are not a have to, forget them. :O)

  18. :) You did it! Got through the first day. I'm sure being back in an office environment will be lots of fun. I'm betting the pantyhose lasts one more day then it gets the heave-ho. :)

  24. Way to go, Debbie! I hope that your new job continues to be as nice as your office view! I'm betting that the PH will stay in your drawer. They look nice but can be a pain! Happy skirt altering!!

  28. Congratulations! What a great view. My DH LOVES his iPad. I think my kids love it even more. I'm not sure if I like it or not. They growl at me if I try to reach for it. :)

  30. Are there better pantyhoses than others? or are they all the same?

  31. CONGRATULATIONS!!

I'm with you about PH, and also bras. I hate both of them, feel like a sausage!. I'm a catholic girl who grew up w/uniforms for 12 years. And then I worked as an RN for 15 years. So I adopted the basics when I worked in business. I had a spring/summer & fall/winter basic wardrobe. 2 skirts/2 pants, a blazer/sweater, and 7 blouses/tops. I could get dressed in 5" w/o thinking. The things i splurged on was jewelry, shoes, scarves, handbags, and stylish haircuts. I wasn't a morning person & getting dressed w/o spending a lot of time thinking helped me a lot. It gave me time to make my lunch and time with my son in the AM.

  32. Congratulations!
Instead of full pantyhose, try thigh highs! I'm short, but full-bellied, and had a hard time getting regular pantyhose to fit. That's not a problem with thigh highs! And, you get that slightly giddy "I have a secret" feeling, LOL!
And valerian can help with shutting off the brain at bedtime :)

Thank you for each and every comment. I appreciate them all, but I have to be honest and let you know that I'm usually bad about answering questions. I hope you understand that there just isn't enough time in the day to do everything I want to do.
