Wardrobe Malfunction

It was 31 degrees when I left for work this morning. Brrrrr.

I finally wore the brown mini houndstooth check skirt I made about a month ago and I think it's now going to go straight into the trash, because OMG look at those wrinkles. The bias side panels are fine, but the center front is a hot mess. And if that wasn't bad enough, my tights pooled around my ankles and knees all day. When I got home and changed out of them, I could pull a good 12" past my foot without affecting the rest of the leg at all. I wonder if I can serge off about 20" from the toes and if this will fix things. Or if I should just add them to the trash too.

On the plus side, my velour mock turtleneck was very snuggly and warm all day and I got to wear a new scarf.

There's been no more progress on the Vogue dress. It's been so cold, I just want to snuggle under the covers and read so that's what I've done the last two nights.

Oh and speaking of reading, here's a complaint. After being on the wait list for 2 months, I got a notice from the Library that it was finally my turn for the Kindle edition of The Help. I immediately did everything I needed to do to get it downloaded to my Kindle, went to open it up and start reading, and there's nothing there but the cover picture. I've deleted and re-tried about 5 times with no success. So I'm stuck. If I think about it, I'll try calling the library tomorrow but I doubt there's anything they can do. I'll probably end up just buying this one. I haven't heard/read a bad thing about the book, so it should be money well spent.

  1. I put my mom on the library wait list for The Help today.
We are still taking our e-reader classes at the library. Today we discovered everyone else has checked out the new & cool books.
That would be my (only)complaint about e-readers - that it is almost more difficult to get the latest e-books than just putting in a hold for the hardback at the library. Might just be a January - I got a new Kindle for Christmas thing.
And FINALLY -- Florida was colder than Oregon today. Haha.

  2. I read 31 degrees and immediately thought, wow, she's overdressed. Then I remembered you aren't talking celcius...

I would be another vote for The Help. I read it well over a year ago, a friend lent it to me. It's a really engrossing read, I sat down one summer day and looked up to find hours had passed and I was getting to the end.

Sad about the wrinkles, it's a great outfit.

  3. It's a nice outfit so instead of throwing your skirt in the trash any chance you can take the center panel apart and add some soft gathers on each side - that way the wrinkles will be intentional.

  4. It's such a pretty skirt, it would be a shame to get rid of it without trying to save it. I wonder if you could maybe raise the waistline.

  5. Wow, how weird is that for me that it's 31 degrees for you in Florida and it's been in the upper 40s the last few days here in Montana. Well, I'm sure that will change for both of us soon. I've always enjoyed reading your blog, but have enjoyed evn more recently while you have been going through your adaptations for your weight changes and work needs. It's been a fun ride and I look forward to more!

  6. What a shame. What about some light-weight iron on interfacing on the front and back. Would that help? Don't toss it without trying to save it.....please. It's such a great skirt. Haven't read The Help but have seen the movie. I enjoyed that. BUT now I've seen the movie first, I don't want to read the book. I am happy to do it the other way around (book first, then movie) but who can explain that??

  7. This might help for the ebook issue. I had a similiar problem with another reader and found that the ebook could only be read in daylight mode (white background). It took a couple of bad books to figure it out as I always read with a black background. Your sweater looks very cozy!

  8. I have a Nook and for the most part, have no problems with downloads. Every once in a while there will be a hiccup and no book which requires a phone call to tech support. Ah, technology.

Can you pleat out the wrinkles?

I enjoy your blog, and look forward to my morning read:)

  9. Love the scarf and top. Sorry about the skirt and tights. One suggestion for the Kindle issue: Go into "Manage my Kindle" from Amazon. Every time I download a library books I have to go into "Manage my Kindle" and download it again. I have no idea why, but it works for me. Hope that helps!

  10. Sorry about the skirt Debbie, but on a positive note you are looking mighty fine with your weight loss. Wish I could get a grip and lose some myself.

  11. I don't have a solution to downloading the book but a suggestion. Our very small library utilizes Overdrive. Rather than read The Help I was able to listen to the audio version. It's a fabulous book. Check out overdrive.com

  12. Obviously as the clothes are becoming baggier on you, so are the stockings...new sizes all-round to keep up with your great weight loss. Love the scarf - nice splash of colour ...

  13. The turtleneck and scarf look great - especially with your coloring. I agree, toss the skirt. Today I tossed a top that wrinkles like that. Not fun to wear and I'm much happier without it.

  14. I'm with you - I would toss the skirt. I would never be happy wearing it again. But I would try serging the toes of the tights. That might be a cool fix to fit issues for tights and pantyhose (Oi, the sizing on those things.)

I did a review of The Help on my blog. http://poured-out.blogspot.com/2011/09/book-review-help.html I liked the book very much - but as literature it was lacking. The plot was so compelling, though, that I was able to overlook its literary deficiencies. I also have a few issues with the author's lack of respect for home sewing _ LOL. You will love the book - not only is it compelling, but it is of historical significance as well.
    Blessings,
    Patti

  15. I read 31 degrees and thought, wow it's hot there like it is here. 31 is the temp here too, but oops, I forgot your 31 (farenheit) is different to my 31 (celcius). Just a bit of diffrence. :)

  16. Bummer about the skirt. Dontcha hate when clothes don't live up to expectations, espaecailly when you've put time into them?

I hear you on the tights - I hate when they are too long. I feel like I have elephant knee syndrome all day long. I'd try serging them up first. What do you have to lose?

P.S. You look so great - happy and healthy!

  17. Hi Debbie. I am a long time lurker. We have a similar shape and I wanted to suggest a pattern to you - Kwik Sew 3659. I made both views this week (but shortened to be shirt length instead of dress length) and both were incredibly flattering (particularly view B) and very quick and easy to sew. View A is almost identical to the cowl neck top in Kwik Sew 3740 that everyone raves about (same shaping in the cowl), but has dolman sleeves and has a slightly lower neckline.

  18. My book group read The Help and liked it -- I think it's easier to get on interlibrary loan rather than via Kindle. My library will hold books at the front desk for 25 cents, which makes it quick to run in and pick up something.

I know the feeling on the skirt -- have a few skirts in limbo right now as they are too big and I'm trying to decide whether to alter them, leave as is in case of weight fluctuation, or donate.

  19. The outfit looks great in spite of the wrinkles. I agree with a previous poster to try iron on interfacing before you trash - nothing ventured blah blah.... and let us know if you serge the tights and it works! Lookin GOOD!
And it was 22 degress in Atlanta yesterday morning and I don't own a winter coat. Brrrr

  20. I was in the same boat as you with the baggy tights, LOL!

I wish I could loan you my Help on Audible.com which is where I read/listened to it. Not sure if you can loan books on tape like you can other books through the Kindle - limited books though.

    You look great BTW!

  21. Just want to let you know I enjoy your posts very much. Your skirt looks really nice despite the wrinkles, you are very good about getting the fit right. I'd try some of the tips here to see if they help before tossing the skirt. As for the whole outfit, you look so good. I'm not surprised a man complemented you on your outfit the other day. I can see you receiving a lot of male attention. You are a charming, funny, and deprecating writer. I look forward to see what you are up to next.

  22. Ugh, hate wrinkly fabric. I have a couple of items in my closet that I will never wear again because of the wrinkles, but haven't been able to let go of because in theory they are nice garments. I think you've inspired me to toss them.

To be the dissenting voice, I did not like The Help at all. But I am a lone voice in the wilderness on that one! (my review, if you're interested http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/93870389)

  23. Try the Super Opaque Tights from www.Nononsense.com. The Spandex keeps them from bagging and also smooth your figure tghru the tunny and hips.
And yu can really minimize those sit-down wrinkles in any slim skirt this way: when you sit down, instead of letting the fabric pull into tiny folds on its own, smooth the excess into one deep pleat across your lap and you'll be relatively wrinkle-free all day.

  24. Might I suggest something about your "trash skirt".... is it lined? Lining really can help with the wrinkles! Just a thought!

Thank you for each and every comment. I appreciate them all, but I have to be honest and let you know that I'm usually bad about answering questions. I hope you understand that there just isn't enough time in the day to do everything I want to do.
